Does Responsive Web Design Hurt Search Rankings?

Responsive web design and SEO
Responsive web design
(RWD)—the development approach of creating a single version of a site that is able to scale proportionally to various screen sizes—has emerged as Google’s official best practice for mobile-optimized pages.

What does this mean for publishers? Should they abandon their separate mobile sites in favor of RWD? How does RWD impact search engine optimization (SEO)?

Google engineer Matt Cutts tackled these questions last month in a help video posted to YouTube. Some key takeaways include: SEO – Transitioning to responsive web design shouldn’t cause publishers to lose organic positions or ranking capability. An advantage of RWD is that it presents search engines with a single set of pages to crawl instead of designated mobile variations, which eliminates the potential for duplicate content. As Google’s Matt Cutts said: “In general, I wouldn’t worry about a site that is using responsive design losing SEO benefits because by definition you’ve got the same URL.”
