The latest Hollywood picture brought the biggest stars in front of the camera, but this time it was a smartphone camera and it’s broken records far beyond the box office. At last night’s Academy Awards, host Ellen DeGeneres strolled into the all-star audience and gathered top stars for a stealthy selfie in the hopes of setting the record for the most retweeted tweet of all time. It quickly become the snapshot seen around the world and set the record for the most retweeted tweet ever, in addition to making the Oscars host the first Twitter user to surpass one million retweets for a single social post. NYDailyNews.com went behind the camera to show how social media now spans from the mainstream to the silver screen.
The selfie starred Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Kevin Spacey, and Bradley Cooper, who had the role of snapping the legendary photo. Ellen DeGeneres smiled in the center and then tweeted the shot on the spot with the caption, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars.”
The selfie shattered the retweet record in 34 minutes and exceeded 1,300,000 retweets in under an hour. In addition to breaking the record, the tweet also “broke” Twitter for some users when its popularity caused the official @TheAcademy account to crash and apologize twice.

This Hollywood moment even pushed politics aside for a moment by beating the previous record of 778,424 retweets held by President Obama after his re-election in 2012. Proving the power of real-time social media, Obama’s social team posted, “We had a good run, little tweet. We had a good run,” just after their retweet was beat.
While Hollywood’s best took home the trophies and Ellen DeGeneres took on the Twitter title, it was a single selfie that took the fame by showing how social media is taking over the world.
