Online News Sources More Popular Than Newspapers

For the first time in history, more people get their news from the Internet than from newspapers, according to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism. Advertising followed suit with more ad dollars going toward online than traditional sources.

Last year was the first time that online advertising exceeded newspaper advertising. Between 2009 and 2010, the online sector grew 13.9% to reach a $25.8 billion total. Yet not all of that spend went toward online news publications since search advertising continues to command the online ad spend environment.

In addition, online news media was the only medium that saw growth year-over-year. Every other medium saw a decline in audience, including television, radio, newspaper and magazines.
