The industry is buzzing about the possible purchase, which could total $900 million and would value the YouTube network at $500 million or more. The main attraction of Maker Studios is the 5.5 billion monthly views it claims to serve. The multichannel network has 380 million subscribers to 50,000 YouTube channels that it manages or owns on behalf of its partners. Disney is drawn to that enormous range and reach of digital content because they realize the value that YouTube content can offer.
Disney is one of many traditional media conglomerates that has been directing both its focus and finances toward digital content. Yet this Disney deal for Maker Studios would be the largest infiltration to date into the YouTube universe by a Hollywood studio.
