With the rising popularity of geo-social promotions, REI chose to use Facebook Places as the forum for the company’s support of charitable causes. Smartblogs.com interviewed REI’s digital manager, Jordan Williams, who offered the following three tips for making geo-social promotions click for a company.
Stick To Your Strengths – REI has a long history of supporting charitable causes, which inspired the company’s geo-social promotion of giving a donation to a nonprofit for each check-in. While most geo-social promotions are tied to a coupon or special deal, the company stayed true to its charitable tradition, which ultimately increased awareness of its nonprofit philanthropy.
Introduce Social Media As A Local Effort – REI talked to each store’s staff to increase front-line employees’ awareness of the company’s social media efforts. To build a sense of camaraderie, each store was able to select the nonprofit that would benefit from the money raised at their store.
Appeal To Multiple Audiences – For REI’s promotion, its audiences included the end customer and its network of 68 nonprofit affiliates. This prompted many audiences to talk about their geo-social promotion.
REI gained an exciting new forum for its charitable activities with its geo-social promotion. With so many ways to leverage the power of geo-social, businesses are discovering that opportunities are everywhere.
