The working world is an incredibly competitive place, but the way to stand out and succeed is by presenting yourself in a positive professional way. Think of yourself as your “professional brand” and both show and sell your brand in the best possible light. Today, your professional brand is more visible than ever, due to the rise of social media, which shows your attitudes and appearance around the clock and around the world. To see how others are crafting their professional brands to fit the modern workplace, LinkedIn conducted a global study called New Norms @Work. LinkedIn shared results from the survey, which featured valuable tips and tactics for promoting your professional brand.
How Others are Taking Care of Business
The study surveyed more than 15,000 professionals in 19 countries and revealed the following professional practices:
- Professionals around the world believe it’s best to list an average of three jobs on LinkedIn profiles.
- More than half of global professionals have started voicing their opinions or challenging ideas at work.
- In contrast, more than 58% of Millennials worldwide do not challenge authority and simply do as they are told.
- One-fifth of full-time professionals around the globe would hide the fact that they’ve been fired.
- Nearly 50% of all global professionals have separate wardrobes for business and pleasure.
- 25% of professionals worldwide say that women are judged on their workplace attire.
Photos Succeed at Sharing Your Success on LinkedIn
Pictures often say more than words ever could about your professional brand. The photos you share speak volumes about your views and personality. Photos on social media give colleagues and clients their first impression of you, as well as firmly establish your professional brand. Interestingly, little things can make a lot of improvement. For instance, featuring a photo on your LinkedIn profile will make you 14 times more likely to be viewed. No wonder Millennials, who change their profile photos more often than any other demographic, are viewed most often on LinkedIn.
Take Command of Your Professional Brand
Since your professional brand is always on display, you need to present and represent yourself in the very best ways on your LinkedIn profile. Announce your recent promotion or achievement by updating your profile. Share industry articles with your network and include your own perspective. Publicly compliment your colleagues on their professional successes. And make sure that your profile photo is current so people can recognize you in person and know you’re a real pro.
