The world is watching and waiting for the birth of the royal baby, but news of the newborn’s arrival will take an unprecedented path. The official birth announcement will actually come directly from Buckingham Palace and will be displayed on a small sheet of paper attached to an easel placed in front of the palace. This tradition dates back to the births of Prince Charles in 1948 and Prince William in 1982. The difference today is the prevalence of social media, which will share and spread the news throughout the world in real time. FoxNews.com reported on how the new royal’s birth will be announced in both conventional and contemporary ways.
According to tradition, after the queen has been advised of the birth, the baby’s gender and time of birth will be formally written on palace letterhead. These will be the only details released. Then, a royal aide will deliver this bulletin to an official who will carry the announcement directly to the palace. The official’s short drive to the palace is expected to be broadcast on live TV to the millions of royal watchers worldwide.
Upon arrival, the official will attach the formal announcement onto a gilded easel in the frontcourt where the world will discover the few details of the royal birth. In a nod to social media, the monarchy’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts will post those details at the very same time.
This traditional method of public posting has experienced a few minor tweaks over the years, such as placing the announcement on an ornate easel instead of onto the black palace railings. Yet a major change in tradition comes with the royal acceptance of social media. This will mean that the new royal baby will be the first to have its own hashtag, which will allow royal watchers all over the world to send their well wishes and share the welcome news.
