This week Twitter announced (via a tweet, of course) that it has begun the rollout of a new Web design that more closely aligns the social media network’s website with its mobile offerings.
For anyone who uses Twitter’s iOS or Android apps, the new web design will look very familiar. The Twitter.com navigation colors and layout have changed a bit, mimicking the mobile design, and users’ profile photos and information have moved to the left-hand side. There is also an inline “new tweet” compose box on the main page.
A few of the icons have gotten a refresh as well, and overall the interface looks brighter and cleaner than the previous version. As GeekWire puts it, the site’s dark aesthetic is gone and “there’s a new white-and-pastel sheriff in town.”
The update also includes an additional option for profile personalization with accent colors.

As TechCrunch notes, the new Web interface may not look new to everyone, since Twitter has been testing various elements of the design on certain users for a while.
The changes shouldn’t dramatically affect how consumers use the platform, though the easier-to-access compose box may inspire some people to tweet more often. However, the update is important because it serves as a reminder that mobile, rather than Web, is often leading the way these days when it comes to digital designs and interfaces.
