It’s no myth that “unicorning” has become the latest Internet meme to capture our imagination. The phenomenon leads people to put on rubber unicorn masks and horse around in ordinary places, seemingly unaware that their masks make them look completely out of place. While it’s the must-see meme of the moment, The Huffington Post reports that it actually originated last year when its creator, Laura DeMerchant, began collecting unicorn masks and encouraging friends to wear them in photos. She later posted those photos on her website, unicornarmy.com. But the trend really took off last month when porn star Andy San Demas was kicked out of a Pittsburgh Pirates game for blocking the aisles while posing for photos in a unicorn mask. That was the Internet meme seen around the world and it’s since inspired people to horn in on the photo fun.
